  16. for his former post as mayor of the city. Remarkably charismatic,
  17. the civil rights-era veteran was mayor of Washington from 1978
  18. to 1990, when he resigned after being videotaped smoking crack.
  19. A six-month jail term followed--and a Nixonian climb back
  20. to respectability representing the poorest of the poor in the
  21. capital. Picking up petitions for the November race, Barry alluded
  22. to "lessons from the past, vision for the future"--an obvious
  23. reference to both his city and himself.
