- <p> RUNNING FOR OFFICE. MARION BARRY, 58, city councilman in Washington;
- for his former post as mayor of the city. Remarkably charismatic,
- the civil rights-era veteran was mayor of Washington from 1978
- to 1990, when he resigned after being videotaped smoking crack.
- A six-month jail term followed--and a Nixonian climb back
- to respectability representing the poorest of the poor in the
- capital. Picking up petitions for the November race, Barry alluded
- to "lessons from the past, vision for the future"--an obvious
- reference to both his city and himself.
